Holistic Care For A Happy Pet

August 15 2023

Holistic Pet Day is August 30th. As you may have noticed, we are very proud to be able to offer both cutting-edge modern technology and natural holistic veterinary medicine. We’ve written prior blogs about holistic pet care, holistic summer care, and even holistic holiday care. However, one aspect of holistic care we haven’t really delved into is the emotional facet of it. By its name, holistic care means the whole being: body, mind, and spirit. A Crown Point, IN vet takes a closer look at the latter two in this article.

Calmness

Is your furry friend nervous and anxious? You may want to look into soothing techniques. Massages can help some pets, while others may appreciate having a safe place to retreat to, such as a crate or enclosed condo. You can also try playing soothing music for your furry pal. Setting out safe plants for pets to nibble on may also help, by bringing a touch of the outdoors in. Check the ASPCA site here for suggestions.

Exercise

You may think that our feline friends are already zen masters, and you wouldn’t be wrong. However, while some kitties are very calm and bomb-proof, others are quite timid. Taking time to play with Fluffy can make a huge difference. It will help her burn off her zoomies, give her something to take that kitty angst out on, and just let her unleash her inner lioness.

Aromatherapy

Aromatherapy can be just as relaxing for pets as it is for us. However, there are a few things to be aware of. First and foremost, some scents are too strong for Fluffy and Fido, and may have the opposite effects. If you’re considering using essential oils, you’ll need to be careful with that as well, as some oils are toxic, especially in high concentrations. Some of the ones to avoid are oils of cinnamon, citrus, pennyroyal, peppermint, pine, sweet birch, tea tree, wintergreen, and ylang ylang. Ask your vet for more information.

Cuddles

Last but not least, be sure to spend time with your pet every day. Cuddles, belly rubs, conversation, and play time all help Fido and Fluffy feel loved and safe. That in turn helps them physically. Stress is just as bad for pets as it is for people!
