Fido’s Thanksgiving Dinner

November 15 2020

Thanksgiving is coming up quick! While food is definitely a big part of the autumn holiday, it’s also important to remember the meaning behind Thanksgiving:gratitude. Dogs are definitely somethingto be thankful for! Of course, your canine buddy will be right there with you as you prepare for the big meal. A veterinarian Crown Point, IN offers some tips on keeping your pup happy and safe in this article.

Begging

Dogs are adorable, and it’s hard to resist giving them a yummy snack. This can be quite dangerous around the holidays, however. You don’t want someone accidentally giving Fido something that isn’t safe for him! Ask guests not to feed your pooch anything without checking first. If need be, you can also put your pet in his crate or in another room during dinner.

Doggy Bag

There’s no reason your canine pal can’t have a plate of his own. Plain, cooked meat, fish, or poultry, without the skin, bones, or fat, is always a good bet. Fido can also have some sides, such as spinach, pumpkin, apple slices, or sweet potato.

Unsafe Foods

Fido is a very enthusiastic eater, and he doesn’t usually balk at snapping up anything within reach. This can be a dangerous habit! Never give your canine pal garlic, onions, scallions, or chives; grapes, currants, or raisins; meat on the bone; chocolate; nuts; xylitol; raw dough or yeast; alcohol; caffeine; or pitted fruits. Anything with a lot ofsalt, sugar, oil, fat, or butter is also off-limits, as are spicy foods.

Treats

No special meal is complete without a snack for Fido. Store-bought options are fine, but you can also make your pupsome homemade goodies. There are lots of great recipes online. Just stick with ingredients that are safe for your furry friend. Some good options are natural peanut butter, sodium-free broth, ripe bananas, and pureed meat or fish.

Guests

Dogs love to be underfoot. This is cute, but can be a bit dangerous. It’s very easy for a pup to get stepped on, or have his tail caught in something!Keep an eye on Fido, especially as people are coming and going.

Leftovers

Dogs are definitely not above going through the trash in search of leftovers. Clear the table immediately after dinner, and use a trashcan that closes tightly.
