Does your kitty spend a lot of time home alone? If so, she is certainly in good company. One of the many wonderful things about cats is the fact that they are so independent. Fluffy will do just fine by herself while you’re at work, and can even stay alone overnight. Read on as a local Crown Point, IN vet offers some tips on leaving your kitty home alone.
Entertainment
While Fluffy will probably spend a large chunk of her alone time snoozing, she’ll still need something to do while she’s awake. Make sure your furball has plenty of fun toys to push under the couch, and offer her at least one comfy spot with a good window view, so she can look out the window and spy on local birds and squirrels. If you really want to pamper your pet, consider getting a pet toy that you can control remotely, through an app on your phone.
Safety
Never underestimate a cat’s ability to get into mischief. You’ll want to take some basic precautions to make sure your kitty stays safe and healthy. Remove or secure toxic plants; plastic bags and wrappers; wires, cords, and threads; chemicals; medicine; and any small or sharp objects.
Comfort
If you won’t be home before dark, leave a light on for Fluffy, so she can find her way around more easily. Sitting home alone in a dark house is no fun! You’ll also want to be sure your feline buddy has lots of soft beds to snuggle up in. Don’t forget about climate control, either: make sure your home stays at a comfortable temperature while you’re out.
Food and Water
Make sure that Fluffy has plenty of food and fresh water. Wet food spoils quickly, so don’t put out extra cans: it will only go bad. Kibble will last longer than canned food, but it still dries out and loses its flavor.
Kittysitting
If you’ll be gone for more than an overnight trip, have someone stop by and check on your kitty, or consider boarding her. Fluffy will need fresh food and water, and she’ll also need her litterbox scooped. Ask your vet for specific recommendations.
