6 Fun Ways to Keep Your Dog From Getting Bored

September 15 2016

Man’s Best Friend has many wonderful traits: he’s cute, loving, loyal, and lots of fun. Fido is also pretty smart. In fact, our canine friends have an intelligence equal to that of a young human child. Bored dogs have a way of getting into mischief, so keeping your canine buddy entertained is very important! Read on as a Crown Point, IN vet offers some doggy entertainment ideas.

Interactive Toys

Make sure Fido has plenty of toys to play with. Many dogs really enjoy puzzle toys, as well as playthings that dispense food. (Tip: For a quick DIY doggy toy, turn a muffin pan over, and drop a few pieces of kibble into the ridges.)

Did you know that training sessions can be both fun and beneficial for Fido? Man’s Best Friend often enjoys learning new tricks and commands. Training can also help shy dogs build confidence, and can help correct behavioral issues in unruly pups. Start with the basics by teaching your furry friend important commands like Sit , Stay, Come, Heel, and Lay Down . Once your pooch has mastered these, you can move on to more advanced training, or teach him some cute tricks.

Many childhood games are just as fun for dogs as they are for kids. For instance, you can put a dog-friendly twist on Red Light , Green Light , by changing the original commands to Stay and Come. Hide and Seek and Tag are also fun to play with Fido.

Does Fido spend all of his outdoor time in the same area? If so, he may really enjoy a change of scenery. Take your pet on a new route when you walk him, or bring him to a local park, so he can conquer unfamiliar patches of grass.

Does your dog like to dig? You can make Fido his own little sandbox with just a few boards and some sand. Bury some fun toys for your four-legged pirate to dig up.

Take time to play with Fido regularly. That quick game of fetch make just make your furry buddy’s day! Plus, this will be fun for you too: it’s almost impossible not to smile when watching a playful pooch run after his favorite toy.
