Thanksgiving is just around the corner! As you start making preparations for that delicious holiday feast, your feline friend will likely be underfoot. After all, Fluffy is an important part of the family! Below, a Crown Point, IN vet discusses Thanksgiving with cats.
Dangerous Foods
While some cats are super finicky, others will eat pretty much anything. Never give your kitty meat on the bone: cooked bones can fragment into small, sharp pieces that are very dangerous. Some other things that are toxic to Fluffy include garlic and onions; nuts; alcohol; pitted fruits; grapes, currants, and raisins; raw dough or meat; and anything containing xylitol. Ask your vet for more information.
Other Hazards
Food isn’t the only Thanksgiving hazard for pet parents to be concerned about. Candles, decorations, fireplaces are also dangerous to kitties. Also, keep an eye on Fluffy as people are coming or going: you don’t want her slipping out an open door!
Suitable Treats
It’s perfectly fine to give your furball a special treat. Kitties can enjoy some cooked, plain turkey, chicken, or fish, with the bones, skin, and fat removed; shredded deli meat; or some canned tuna or salmon in water. Although milk isn’t good for cats, you can offer Fluffy some cat milk, which is sold in pet stores and groceries. You can also pamper your furry pal by getting her a new toy, a small catnip or cat grass plant, or a piece of kitty furniture.
Fluffy’s Agenda
Your furball may very well have her own Thanksgiving plans. It’s probably safe to say that several naps are on your kitty’s itinerary. Fluffy may plan on begging for food, and, if possible, sleeping on your guests’ coats. She may also spend time stealing people’s chairs, trying to trip you, and/or grooming herself in plain view.
Keeping Kitty Comfortable
Some kitties love being petted and cuddled, and will spend the day hopping from lap to lap. However, not all cats are that bold. Some are quite shy, and may bolt for their favorite hiding spots as soon as the doorbell rings. If you have a scaredy-cat on your hands, put Fluffy in a quiet room, with toys, food, and a comfy bed, so she can spend the holiday napping peacefully.
