Autumn Care for Cats

October 1 2017

It’s hard to believe, but autumn is already here. One of the best things about fall is being able to snuggle up with a good book or movie, a hot drink, and a purring kitty on chilly nights. Fluffy does need a bit of extra TLC at this time of year, however. Here, a Crown Point, IN vet discusses autumn care for cats.

Shedding

As Fluffy exchanges her summer wardrobe for a winter coat, you may find your things covered in kitty hair. We recommend brushing your feline buddy daily. This will trap dead fur in a brush, so it doesn’t end up stuck to your clothes and furniture. Brushing will also reduce the amount of hairballs your pet gets. Ask your vet for tips on using hairball remedies.

Beds

It may not seem possible, but cats somehow manage to sleep even more on grey, rainy days. Offer your furry friend lots of comfy napping spots. This is also a good time of year to give Fluffy’s bed a good washing. Senior cats and kittens may also appreciate heated beds or kitty tunnels to snuggle up in.

Older Cats

Is your feline pal a senior? If so, Fluffy may get stiff and sore in cold weather. Certain supplements, such as fish oil, may help with this. You may also want to set out pet ramps for Fluffy, so she can climb up to her favorite napping spots.

Veterinary Care

Make sure your kitty sees the vet regularly. If Fluffy is overdue for an exam, schedule one ASAP. It’s also important to make sure your pet is up to date on her parasite control products and vaccinations. Ask your vet for specific recommendations.

Hazards

At this time of year, many people prep their lawns and gardens for winter, and set out rodent traps. Pesticides; fungicides; rodenticides; automotive chemicals (especially antifreeze); and other toxic substances are all very dangerous to cats. Fluffy could get sick just by walking through a recently-treated patch of grass and then licking her paws! However, chemicals aren’t the only danger kitties face outside. Weather, poisonous plants, mushrooms, and mold are all hazardous. Halloween is also a very dangerous time of year for cats. Keep Fluffy safe and sound indoors!
