Winter is finally behind us, and you know what that means for our furry pals … it’s shedding season! Read on for some great tips from a Crown Point, IN vet on getting through this hairy time of year.
Good Diet
Did you know that your pet’s diet can affect how much fur he or she sheds? A good, nutritious diet will help keep your furry pal’s coat healthy and shiny, and will reduce the amount of dead, dry fur they shed. Offer your four-legged buddy a premium pet food, one that contains fatty acids, essential vitamins and minerals, and omega 3 and 6 oils. Ask your vet for specific advice.
Vacuum
Vacuuming regularly is one of the best ways to reduce the amount of fur or dander in your home. We recommend vacuuming high-traffic areas daily, and doing more thorough cleanings once a week.
Air Filters
A good air purifier is a great investment for pet parents! Remember to change your air filter out regularly.
Fur Busting
Try using a squeegee to get fur off your upholstery. A rubber dish glove also works well, as will a damp sponge. If you want quickly de-fur a piece of clothing, toss it in the dryer with a damp washcloth for a few minutes. We also recommend keeping a few extra lint rollers on hand. Keep one in your car, one at work, and a few around the house.
Brushing
Brushing your pet is beneficial for several reasons. For one thing, you’ll be capturing that dead hair in a brush before it gets stuck to your clothing or furniture. Regular beauty sessions are also good for your pet’s circulation. If you have a dog, take Fido outside to brush him. That way the extra fur will just blow away. If you have a kitty, choose a time when your feline pal is feeling relaxed and cuddly. (Given that cats spend the vast majority of their time sleeping, this shouldn’t be difficult.) Settle down with Fluffy in your lap. Start by just petting her, and then slowly incorporate the brush.
Furniture Covers
Removable slipcovers can come in very handy at this time of year. Choose ones that are machine washable, and easy to get on and off.
