Tips for Keeping Fleas Away

July 15 2019

Summer is a peak season for fleas and ticks. These disgusting parasites are much more than an itchy nuisance. They can spread dangerous diseases, many of which can afflict both people and pets! A Crown Point, IN vet offers tips on keeping fleas away in this article.

Parasite Control Products

The first—and most effective—weapon in your fight against fleas and ticks are parasite control products. You can choose from a variety of options, such as sprays, collars, topical drops, and shampoos. It’s worth noting that you should never double up on these, even if you are fighting an infestation. That could expose your pet to unsafe levels of chemicals! Ask your vet for more information.

Vacuuming

Did you know that vacuuming regularly can help keep your home free of fleas? You’ll want to empty the canister after every use. Dump the contents into a plastic bag, and then seal the bag and dispose of it outdoors. This will prevent any eggs you vacuumed up from hatching inside your home. If you take your dog on a lot of car rides, vacuum your car or truck as well.

Housekeeping

Wash your pet’s bedding regularly. Use hot water and unscented detergent, and put the dryer on the hottest cycle. If your pet’s bed can’t be machine-washed, try vacuuming it. Running a hot iron over it can also help kill flea eggs. Just do a spot check first, and, of course, be careful not to burn it. Keep in mind that fleas like to hide in nooks and crannies. Clean your doorjambs, windowsills, and baseboards regularly. You can also sprinkle food-grade diatomaceous earth around these areas: it’s safe for pets, but deadly to fleas and ticks. Also, don’t leave clothes on the floor: piles of laundry make inviting habitats for parasites!

Lawn Care

Basic landscaping will make your property less appealing to parasites. Both fleas and ticks like to lurk in tall grass, so keeping your lawn neatly mowed can help deter them. Also, pick up brush and debris, such as dead branches. If you have a garden and/or produce trees, remove fallen fruits and veggies immediately. Otherwise, they may attract animals, like deer, that carry ticks. Last but not least, keep hedges trimmed, so they don’t touch your house.
