Choosing the Right Doggy Bed

November 1 2017

Has your dog flattened his doggy bed? Is your pup’s bed looking old and worn? If so, it may be time to get Fido a new bed. However, choosing the perfect bed for your pet can actually be a bit confusing. With so many different shapes and sizes to choose from, it can be hard to tell which one is right for your dog. Read on for some tips from a Crown Point, IN vet on choosing doggy beds.

Large Breeds

If your canine friend is a big dog, you’ll need to choose a bed that offers a lot of support. Your pooch will likely smoosh a regular bed! An orthopedic doggy bed is a good choice. You can also get an elevated hammock bed. (Note: these are also great for outdoors.) A child’s mattress may also be a good option.

Older Dogs

Once your four-legged friend enters his golden years, he will start to slow down, and could get stiff and sore. It isn’t uncommon for senior dogs to develop arthritis and/or hip dysplasia. Making sure your faithful pet has a comfy bed is very important! After all, Fido does spend about half of his time sleeping. We recommend orthopedic beds. Your canine pal may also enjoy a heated bed or a heating pad. Ask your vet for specific advice.

Dogs That Stretch Out

Does Fido like to sprawl out when he’s sleeping? If so, he may like a regular bed, which is basically like a giant pillow.

Small Pups

Little dogs often like beds with raised sides, as they feel safer in enclosed places. You can also put a regular pet bed into a hard-shell suitcase, hatbox, or upcycled end table for your canine buddy.

Dogs That Make Nests

Does your dog like to turn in circles and stomp himself out a little nest before laying down? Get Fido a beanbag bed. Just remember to fluff it up for him regularly.

Materials

Material is also something to consider. Look for pet-safe fibers, such as cotton. It’s also a good idea to pick a bed with a removable cover. That way, you’ll be able to toss the cover into the wash. You can also put a clean, old comforter on Fido’s bed for extra padding.
