Thanksgiving isn’t very far off! Our canine buddies are definitely something to be thankful for. And as for Fido, we have a pretty good idea about the things he’s thankful for. At the top of the list? His human buddies, belly rubs, and, of course, food. It’s fine to give your pup a special treat. Just be sure to stick with safe, suitable foods. Here, a Crown Point, IN vet list some foods that are safe for dogs.
Meat, Fish, and Poultry
Most types of meat, fish, and poultry are safe for our canine pals. You can share some of that delicious turkey with your pup. Just be sure to remove the skin, bones, and fat first. Fido can also have some shredded deli meat. A little bacon, sausage, or pepperoni is also ok, though you don’t want to go overboard with fatty treats. Organ meats, like liver and kidney, are also fine in small amounts, though they shouldn’t be fed too often.
Sodium-Free Broth
Sodium-free chicken, fish, or beef broth is a great snack for your dog! If you want to make your furry friend some eggnog, mix it with fat-free yogurt and a little liver powder.
Cheese
Cheese is another food that is safe in small doses. Just don’t let your canine buddy convince you to give him too much. Cooked eggs are also fine.
Peanut Butter
Natural peanut butter is also safe for your furry pal. Smear some on a doggy biscuit, or put it in a Kong toy. Just check the label to make sure it doesn’t contain xylitol.
Certain Fruits and Veggies
While not all fruits and veggies are safe, quite a few of them are fine. Fido can have pureed squash or pumpkin, cooked sweet or mashed potatoes, cooked peas, carrots, or spinach. Bananas, apple slices, and blueberries are fine. Just make sure not to give your pet anything covered in toppings, like butter or salt.
Unsafe Foods
Many thanksgiving foods are toxic to pets. Never give your furry buddy anything that contains garlic, onions, scallions, or chives; pitted fruits; grapes, currants, or raisins; nuts; avocados; caffeine; alcohol; chocolate; or xylitol. Meat on the bone is also unsafe, as are raw dough, meat, or yeast.
Happy Thanksgiving! We hope you all have a safe and happy holiday. Please feel free to contact us, your Crown Point, IN vet clinic, anytime!
