September is Happy, Healthy Cat Month! Kitties are wonderful pets, who have earned special places in our hearts and on our laps. And, while we think our feline buddies deserve to be happy all the time, this is a great chance to make sure that your furball is content. A Crown Point, IN vet discusses keeping Fluffy purring in this article.
Beds
Cats certainly do take their beauty rest seriously. Fluffy can sleep up to 20 hours a day, though she averages a ‘mere’ 14-16. Make sure your pet has lots of comfy napping spots. Store-bought beds are fine, but your kitty will also happily curl up on a soft blanket or pillow in a box or wicker basket.
Playtime
Kitties are hunters by nature, so they have a strong instinctive need to pounce on things. We know, Fluffy doesn’t look very ferocious when she’s attacking a dust bunny, but your pet does have the instincts of a predator. Give your cat lots of toys, and take time to play with her regularly.
Veterinary Care
Fluffy would probably rather take another nap than visit us, but those appointments are definitely in her best interests. Your pet will look and feel better with proper veterinary care!
Enrichment
Cats can’t spend all of their time sleeping. Fluffy will need something to do when she’s awake. Window seats are great, as many furballs love watching birds. Your kitty will also appreciate having pet tents, cardboard boxes, and newspaper tunnels to explore.
Clean Litterbox
Make sure to keep your cat’s litterbox clean. No one likes a dirty bathroom! We recommend scooping daily and changing the litter every week or so.
Kitty Comforts
Although Fluffy won’t mind getting comfortable on your bed or sofa, she really should have a few things that fit her needs… specifically, her needs to nap and scratch, and also to stare at her humans. Get your furry pal a cat tower or a kitty condo to look adorable in. If you want to save money, go the DIY route. You’ll find some great ideas online!
Love
Cats are really very emotional, and are always happiest when they feel loved. Pay attention to Fluffy! Talk to her, pet her, and let her doze off on your lap sometimes.
