Have you recently adopted a rabbit? Congratulations on your adorable new pet! A bit of bunnyproofing is definitely on the agenda. This is important for protecting both your bunny and your belongings. In this article, a local Crown Point, IN vet offers some advice on making your home safe for Floppy.
Remove Potential Dangers
The first thing you want to do is make sure that anything you don’t want Floppy nibbling on is well out of paws’ reach. This includes things like toxic plants; household chemicals and cleaning agents; plastic bags and ties; automotive products; unsafe foods; and medicine. Personal items, like shoes, should also be put away, as should anything small or sharp, such as jewelry, beads, craft kit pieces, and buttons.
Look At Bunny Level
One thing you may want to do is get on your hands and knees and take a look at your house from Floppy’s eye level. Seal off openings behind and beneath furniture and cabinets. One way to do this is to put plastic storage totes beneath beds and sofas, to block your pet’s access. You’ll also need to address dangling wires and cords. Treat anything that can’t be moved with taste deterrent.
Laundry
Bunnies are definitely not above chewing on clothing that’s been left on the floor. This can be quite dangerous, as your furball could choke on buttons or strings. Plus, it’s a good way to ruin your stuff!
Use Protective Coverings
Rabbits often go for furniture legs and baseboards. They’re both chewable (to rabbits, at least) and easy for your adorable chewing machine to reach. It may be worth your while to get attractive coverings. Taste deterrent may also help.
Keep Doors Closed
Closets can basically be amusement parks for bunnies. They can also be dangerous, as your pet could knock something over onto herself. Keep closet doors closed! In fact, we also recommend shutting the doors to any room you don’t want Floppy in.
Books
Keep books, papers, and magazines out of your pet’s range. Yes, Floppy can (and will) eat homework!
Tips
In addition to bunnyproofing, it’s also important to provide your pet with lots of safe, suitable toys. Floppy can also be taught what is and is not okay to nibble on. Ask your vet for advice on toys and training.
