There’s a pretty important animal holiday coming up. World Wildlife Day is March 3rd! If you’re an animal lover, you probably appreciate and care about wild animals as well as pets. Read on as a Crown Point, IN vet lists some ways to celebrate this special occasion with your canine companion.
Training
Man’s Best Friend is descended from wolves, and he still has a pretty strong prey drive. Fido is instinctively driven to chase small critters, such as squirrels. With so many wildlife populations in decline, it’s best for you to curb your pet’s inner predator. Training can help a lot with this. Teach your pooch basic commands, such as Sit, Stay, Come, Heel, and Drop It.
Park
Getting outdoors is good for both you and your furry pal. If it’s warm enough, take your canine buddy to a park or trail, and let him enjoy the change of scenery. Do some birdwatching while you’re there!
Spay/Neuter
Granted, getting neutered probably wouldn’t be your pup’s favorite way to spend the day. However, preventing him from adding to the massive pet overpopulation is very important. This will help conserve resources, which in turn helps wildlife.
Backyard Sanctuary
Do you have a yard for your four-legged friend to patrol? Take a few steps to make it more of a sanctuary for wildlife. Add a birdfeeder, or plant some flowers that will help feed pollinators. (Fido can supervise, of course.)
Revisiting Products
One way to help protect wildlife is to protect the environment. Take a look at the products you get for your household. This can include anything from your furry friend’s food and treats to his shampoo or doggy bed. Opt for things that use sustainable resources. Just make any changes to your dog’s diet or care regimen slowly, and only after consulting your vet.
Brushing
Weather permitting, take Fido outside and give him a good brushing. With any luck, local birds will pick up some of that fur and use it for their nests!
Movie Time
At the end of the day, why not relax with a wildlife-themed movie? There are plenty of great ones to choose from. Fido will be more than happy to hang out with you as you’re relaxing!
