Hedgehog Care Tips

February 15 2020

Do you have a hedgehog? If so, you may want to set a reminder for February 2nd: it’s Hedgehog Day! These little guys are becoming quite popular, and it isn’t hard to see why. They are super cute! However, just like any other pet, hedgehogs need proper care to thrive. Read on as local Crown Point, IN vet offers a few tips on caring for your quilled buddy.

Get A Proper Cage

A hamster cage may seem a good choice for Hedgie, but in actuality, these are much too small. Your adorable pet should have at least a 2 x 4 enclosure. But, as the saying says, the bigger, the better. Ask your vet for specific advice.

Avoid Scented Soaps

Avoid using scented soaps when bathing Hedgie. That cute little nose is pretty sensitive! Ask your vet for more information.

Keep Your Pet Active

Just like people, hedgehogs need proper activity to stay healthy. If your pet has nothing to do but sit in his cage, he’ll quickly become obese, which would be very bad for his health. Offer your spiky buddy tunnels and tubes to explore. Exercise wheels are also fine. Just avoid wire ones, as they can be dangerous.

Let Hedgie Make His Own Schedule

Hedgehogs are nocturnal by nature, so your pet will spend a chunk of the daytime sleeping. Don’t keep him awake during the day. This can be extremely stressful for the little guy!

Avoid Cage Rage

Living in a cage can get dull and frustrating. Hedgie will need free time out of his cage every night. You may want to set up a little play area for him, to keep him out of mischief. A kiddie pool works great for this! This will also keep Hedgie from eliminating on your floors. Keep a close eye on your hedgehog if you do let him explore: vents, stairs, and unsafe objects are just a few things that are dangerous to your tiny buddy.

Don’t Overindulge Him

Hedgehogs love snacks, and they are pretty talented little beggars. It doesn’t take much to overfeed a hedgehog. These guys can quickly become obese. Don’t let your tiny pet manipulate you into giving him too many treats! One or two snacks a day is plenty.

Happy Hedgehog Day! Please contact us, your local Crown Point, IN vet clinic, for all of your prickly pet’s veterinary care needs.
