Tips for Adopting a Shelter Cat

June 1 2019

June is Adopt A Shelter Cat Month! If you’re planning to bring a new kitty into your home, this is a great time to do it. At this time of year, shelters are often overwhelmed with kittens, which puts additional strain on already-strained resources. A Crown Point, IN vet offers some tips on adopting shelter cats in this article.

Be Prepared

Before you bring your feline buddy home, you’ll need to get some supplies. Fluffy will need dishes, bedding, toys, treats, food, and a litterbox and litter. If you aren’t sure whether you are going to adopt a kitten or adult cat, hold off on the food and litter. With these products, it’s best to buy things that are appropriate for your pet’s age.

Choose Carefully

Sometimes people only need to take one look at an adorable furry face to know they’ve found their pet. Fluffy also sometimes chooses people, by grabbing their sleeve with her paw, or jumping into their laps in visiting rooms. However, it isn’t always that easy. Take your time when choosing. After all, adopting a cat is a lifetime commitment!

Don’t Overlook Imperfect Pets

Kittens, as we all know, are almost impossibly cute. It’s hard to resist those squeaky meows and tiny furry faces. However, don’t overlook older cats, or kitties that are specially-abled. They often have a much harder time getting adopted. This is very sad, because they are often very affectionate and full of purrs, and really just want someone to love them.

Ask Questions

It won’t hurt to inquire about Fluffy’s past. In some cases, there may not be any information available. However, you could also end up learning quite a bit about your feline pal. You won’t know unless you try!

Pat Yourself On The Back

Adopting a cat is a wonderful thing to do, and one that is very rewarding. You’re giving that one lucky furball a second chance at happiness and a new lease on life. You’re also indirectly helping other kitties, both by freeing up space at the shelter and supporting them financially. These are definitely things to feel great about! Your new pet will repay you for your kindness with unconditional love and endless purrs and cuddles. Talk about a win-win!
