8 Ways to Pamper a Senior Cat

October 15 2018

Is your feline pal aged six or older? If so, Fluffy is technically a senior. As your kitty ages, she will still be the same adorable furball as she always was. You may not notice any drastic changes in your cat right away. However, you may want to make some minor changes to her care regimen. Here, a Crown Point, IN vet offers tips on how to keep a senior cat purring.

Older cats are very experienced nappers, and can spend up to 20 hours a day snoozing. Offer Fluffy lots of comfy beds to snuggle up in!

Your kitty won’t be as playful as she once was, but she’ll still have her moments of friskiness. Try to spend time every day playing with Fluffy. Pouncing and jumping are great for cats, both mentally and physically. These play sessions don’t have to last long; in fact, your pet will probably lose interest after a few minutes.

Get your kitty a litterbox with low sides. These are typically easier for older cats to manage than ones with high walls. If you have more than one floor in your home, keep litterboxes on every story so Fluffy doesn’t have to use the stairs as much.

Your feline friend may begin to have trouble seeing after dark. Keep a nightlight on to help Fluffy find her way around.

Senior cats sometimes have a hard time reaching their whole bodies when grooming themselves. Brushing your cat regularly will help keep her coat smooth and soft.

Veterinary Care

Make sure to take Fluffy to the vet regularly. At home, keep an eye out for signs of illness. Some common ones are hiding, poor grooming, vomiting, diarrhea, fever, and lethargy. Call your vet right away if you notice anything unusual. If your feline pal develops any specific ailments, like arthritis, ask your vet for care advice.

Fluffy may have trouble reaching her favorite napping spots. Set out pet ramps, or arrange footstools for her to use as stairs.

Fluffy will be happiest if she feels loved and safe. Pay lots of attention to your furball, and spend time with her every day. That little motor will still work just fine!
