5 Ways to Help Your Dog Beat the Heat

June 1 2018

The dog days of summer are approaching! Hot weather can be hard on our four-legged friends. Fido loves to run and play outdoors, but can overheat very easily. In this article, a Crown Point, IN vet lists some great ways to help your pooch stay cool this summer.

Kiddie Pool

Man’s Best Friend often loves splashing around. Get a kiddie pool for your pup to play in on hot days. Fido may also enjoy playing in the spray from a sprinkler or hose. This can make for some super adorable pet photos!

Hammock Bed

Did you know that hammock beds stay cooler than regular beds? This is because they allow air to flow beneath them. These are great for outdoors, as they are easy to hose off. Fido may also enjoy having a fan pointed at his bed. Just make sure it can’t fall over on him! Another thing you can do is put a cold water bottle in your furry buddy’s doggy bed, under a thin towel.

Swim Session

Many of our canine buddies love swimming. If your pooch seems to think of himself as a fuzzy, four-legged duck, indulge him with a trip to a pet-friendly pool or swimming hole. Just be sure to put your pup’s safety first. First, make sure your vet gives the green light. Swimming isn’t right for every dog. If your furry pal doesn’t know how to swim, take time to teach him. Also, never leave Fido by the water unattended, and avoid areas with strong currents or heavy wakes.

Summer Haircut

Some dogs are much more comfortable with a summer haircut. This isn’t a one-size-fits-all recommendation, however. Some fluffy breeds, such as huskies, have fur that actually helps insulate them from the heat. Ask your vet for specific advice.

Cold Snacks

Who doesn’t like an ice cream on a sweltering afternoon? You can find doggy ice cream in many pet stores and groceries. You can also make your own! Look online for recipes, and then customize them to suit your dog’s taste. Just be sure to only use ingredients that are safe for Fido. Some good options are plain yogurt, pureed pumpkin, natural peanut butter, ripe bananas, and organic baby food.
