Working Out With Fido

April 15 2017

Does your dog love to run and play? Man’s Best Friend can be very frisky, especially when he’s little. Making sure your pup gets the right amount and type of exercise is very important! If you’re an active type, you may find that your pet makes a great workout buddy. Read on as a local Crown Point, IN vet discusses working out with Fido.

Fido’s Exercise Needs

All dogs need some form of activity. You’ll need to do some research—and consult your vet—to find out exactly what kind of exercise your pooch needs. For instance, many large breeds should not be encouraged to jump or stand on their hind legs, as it can put too much stress on their hips and bones. Small dogs and brachycephalic pups, like pugs, can get winded and/or overexerted very easily, so vigorous exercise may be too much for them. Your pet’s age, breed, weight, and health are all important factors in determining his exercise needs. Ask your vet for more information.

Overexertion

Be careful never to push your dog too hard. If you are just starting a workout routine with Fido, take time to build his endurance slowly. It’s also important to keep a close eye on your furry friend. If your canine companion starts panting heavily, or seems tired, give him some water and let him rest.

Fun Options

If your vet gives the all-clear, there are lots of activities you can do with your pet. Running is great for some dogs. Other pooches may prefer swimming, or exploring new parks or trails. If you’re feeling a bit more adventurous, look into skijoring or bikejoring, which are basically doggy-friendly versions of skiing and biking. You can also try doga, which is—you guessed it—yoga with dogs.

Fitness Plan

There are some really fun ways you can incorporate your furry pal into your workout. Try playing ‘tag’ with Fido: take turns chasing him, and having him chase you. Or, grab your canine buddy’s favorite toy and include your pet in your workout regime. When you do sit ups, toss the toy every time you sit up. You can also do variations on this with lunges, squats, and pushups.
