Today I lost my best friend. He was with me at my dad’s funeral. He was with all of us when we searched for animals displaced by the tornados. He has found more lost pets than any human I know. He kept me safe on late night animal control calls. He has taught me so much and I’m so thankful that I called the phone number in the free puppy ad from the newspaper almost 12 years ago. He was the worst dog anyone could ask for. He has destroyed countless couches, jumped through a glass window, embarrassed the hell out of me at agility trials, and almost caused me many car accidents (such as jumping out the sunroof). He keeps the pack in order here. I trust his instincts and I feel safe with him. We retired him in April 2014 after one last request. I promised him if he found our lost dog “Jyl” and brought her back to me, I would never ask him to work again. He did exactly that. One year later, almost to the day, he stopped using his leg and it was discovered he had bone cancer. My dog that could do ANYTHING (or at least try) couldn’t do much anymore. That was 6 months ago and last night he gave me the final sign that he is ready to leave me. I love and respect this dog more than words can explain. My heart will heal but it will always have a scar?
