Adopt A Rescued Bird

January 2 2022

January is Adopt A Rescued Bird Month! If you’re ready to bring a new feathered buddy into your home, you may want to consider a rescue. A Crown Point, IN vet goes over some of the pros and cons of adopting a rescued bird in this article.

Is A Rescued Bird Right?

If you’re an animal lover, as we are, then you likely (and rightly) believe that all our animal companions deserve to be safe, happy, healthy, and comfortable. That applies to birds as well! Giving one poor bird that’s had a rough time a great forever home can be a very rewarding experience. However, it’s also important to be realistic. Polly may take some time to warm up to you, especially if she was neglected or abused. She may also be loud and/or sloppy. If you’ve never had a bird before, make sure that you aren’t biting off more than you can chew.

Getting Ready

You’ll want to have things ready for Polly before you bring her home. A great cage is a must! The type of cage your winged friend will need depends on what kind of bird you get, so do plenty of research before you go shopping. (A word to the wise: bigger is always better.) You’ll also need to do plenty of birdproofing. Your little buddy will also need plenty of toys and perches, as well as food and dishes.

Things To Consider

Before adopting any bird, make sure that you’re ready, willing, and able to care for Polly for the rest of her life. Keep in mind that with some birds that could entail decades of TLC! Do plenty of research about your potential pet and her species. Don’t move forward unless you’re completely ready to commit.

Care

One of the first things you’ll want to do is find a great avian veterinarian. Even if Polly appears to be in decent shape, she’ll need a full exam. She may also need beak, nail, or wing trims. While you’re there, ask your vet for specific advice on your bird’s diet and care needs.

Options

If adopting a rescued bird isn’t right for you, you can still help homeless birds. Consider making a donation to a bird rescue. Every little bit helps!
