Holistic Holiday Pet Care

December 15 2021

Season’s Greetings! The holidays can get hectic, but they also give us a chance to relax and catch up with our friends and family members, and enjoy those seasonal foods, events, and traditions. This actually very much aligns with the theories behind holistic care, and its focus on healing the body, mind, and soul from the inside out. That can be just as beneficial for pets as it is for people! A Crown Point, IN vet offers a few holistic pet care tips below.

Gifts

Pets definitely deserve a few special gifts, for all the love, loyalty, and entertainment they provide. When choosing things like toys and furniture, opt for things that were made from natural, sustainable resources. Avoid anything that contains a lot of chemicals. You can also upcycle used goods into toys and furniture for your animal companion. This can be a great kids’ project!

Food

We always look forward to enjoying some special treats at this time of year. Just stick with safe, healthy options. You can actually try making your pet’s snacks. Here’s one option that’s good for both Fluffy and Fido: combine a can of sustainably-caught tuna with organic fat-free yogurt and a little parsley. Divide into small portions, and then cook until they have the desired amount of crunch. You’ll also need to be careful not to let your pet have any unsafe foods. Ask your vet for more information on this.

Zen

This time of year can be just as stressful for pets as it is for people. Visitors, travel, noise, and parties can all make your animal companion anxious and uneasy. If you’re having an event, take steps to shield your pet from the commotion. Fluffy and Fido may prefer to sleep through the festivities in a quiet back room, with comfy bedding, toys, and some background noise. For birds, covering the cage can help soothe them. Of course, it’s also important to just take some quiet time for yourself. Spend some quality time with your animal companion!

Giving

This is also the season of giving. Consider donating to an animal charity or rescue. Wildlife organizations are a great choice as well. You can also look into volunteering or fostering. Helping animals really is good for the soul!
