Pet Hydration Tips

July 1 2021

July is Pet Hydration Month! Making sure that your pet is properly hydrated is always important, but it’s especially crucial at this time of year. Your furry pal can’t get themselves a cold drink, so it’s up to you to monitor their water intake and make sure they’re getting enough. A Crown Point, IN vet offers some tips on this below.

 Water Bowls

The most important thing here is going to be making sure that your furry best friend always has fresh water available. You may need to set out more than one water station. For instance, if you have a senior pet and/or your home has more than one floor, it’s a good idea to put out a few water bowls. If you have a yard, your pet will need water outside as well.

Fountains

Pet fountains are becoming more popular, as people are realizing that many of our animal friends prefer to drink running water. Get your pet a fountain, and see if they like it. If you have a dog, you can also get Fido one that sprays water when he steps on a pad. (We probably don’t have to tell you how cute this is to watch.)

Treats

Try to offer food and treats with high water content. If you want to give Fido a snack, offer him something like doggy ice cream, which you can find in stores. You can also make your canine pal some pupsicles by freezing treats or kibble in water or sodium-free broth, using waxed paper cups. Fluffy may enjoy some chilled or frozen squeezable cat treats, or perhaps some tuna and tuna juice poured over shaved ice.

Out And About

Many people like to bring their dogs along with them when they go to different places. Always bring water along for Fido! You can get your pup a doggy water bottle with an attached dispenser. Or, keep collapsible dishes in your car. Speaking of cars, it’s a good idea to keep a few gallons of water on hand in yours as well.

Ice

While you don’t want to offer your pet too much ice, you can give them an ice cube or two to lick or chew when it’s hot. (Fluffy may decide to play hockey with hers, but that’s okay, too!)
