Myths About Holistic Pet Care

May 1 2020

Here at Southlake Animal Hospital, we are very pleased to be able to offer both holistic and traditional veterinary care to our furry patients. Holistic care, in the veterinary world, encompasses a variety of treatments and elements, such as homeopathy, nutritional counseling, and acupuncture, to name a few. There truly are some wonderful benefits to holistic care. However, there are also misconceptions about it. A Crown Point, IN vet discusses some common myths below.

It’s Dangerous

This is a common misconception. There are a few reasons behind it. Homeopathic medicine, as used for people, often includes things like essential oils, herbs, and supplements, which are not necessarily safe or suitable for pets. Rest assured: we don’t advocate using anything that hasn’t been proven to be both safe and effective! The point is always to offer options on a case-by-case basis, and, when possible, focus on solutions that provide gentle healing and promote overall wellness.

It’s A Scam

To be fair, there are companies that misinform or manipulate customers with scare tactics and/or slick marketing techniques. That doesn’t mean holistic pet care is ‘snake oil.’ Natural remedies often do end up passing scrutiny. For example, honey is often touted as folk medicine. However, studies have shown that it does contain powerful antibiotic and healing properties. Now, it’s a common ingredient in cough drops. (Note: do not give honey to your pet, unless you have sugar gliders. That was just an example.) Acupuncture is another example of this. Many people in the Western world scoffed at it initially. It turns out that acupuncture points are actually nerve clusters, and stimulating them does have positive—and measurable–effects on the body, such as stimulating the release of natural painkilling hormones.

It Stands Alone

One of the benefits of being a veterinarian in this day and age is the fact that we now have the ability to offer our patients the best of both worlds. This is often the case with holistic pet care. For example, a dog with arthritis may benefit from traditional care, acupuncture, a holistic diet, and cold laser treatments. Holistic care is something that you can integrate into every part of your pet’s life, from their diet to their wellness care, and even their environment!
