Cleaning Tips for People With Dogs

August 1 2018

Our canine friends have many wonderful qualities: they’re loyal, lovable, smart, and lots of fun! Dogs aren’t necessarily the cleanest roommates, however. In fact, Fido can be a bit of a slob! We are here to help! Read on as a local Crown Point, IN vet offers some helpful tips for dog owners on keeping your home clean.

Basics

Vacuuming is one of the best things you can do to keep your home from smelling like dog. We recommend doing high-traffic areas and Fido’s favorite spots daily, and more thorough cleanings every week. You may even want to invest in a steam cleaner. Changing your air filter regularly will also help defeat bad doggy odors. Last but not least, be sure to dust regularly.

Paw Care

Keep a damp cloth near the door, so you can wipe your canine buddy’s paws down when you first bring him in after a walk. You may even be able to train Fido to wipe his furry feet on a doggy mat!

Fur Busting

Did you know that a squeegee works great at removing pet hair from carpets and upholstery? You can also use a damp sponge or rubber dish gloves. During peak shedding times, you may want to use slipcovers on your furniture. Choose machine-washable ones that are easy to throw into the wash.

Stain Busting

Keep an enzyme-based cleaner on hand for accidents. You can also use baking soda and vinegar to get urine stains and odors out of a carpet.

Noseprints

Does your canine pal leave nose art on your windows? Use vinegar and newspaper to remove your pup’s masterpieces.

Bathtime Hack

Get a clear shower curtain, and cut two slits in it, about shoulder-width apart. Hang it up when you are giving your dog his bath. You’ll be able to reach through to scrub Fido, but won’t get splashed as much.

Bedding

When buying doggy beds, always pick pieces that can be washed. If you can’t fit your pet’s whole bed into the wash, get a cover for it, and wash that instead.

Materials

Choosing the right fabrics and materials can also make a huge difference. If possible, opt for floors instead of carpets.
