Caring for a Large Dog

September 1 2017

Is your canine buddy larger than life? Big dogs can be super lovable, and they often have wonderful temperaments. However, if your pooch is a large breed, his needs will be a bit different from those of a little dog. Read on as a Crown Point, IN vet discusses caring for a large dog.

Bedding

Big dogs often quickly flatten beds made for smaller pooches. We recommend getting Fido a good orthopedic bed, so he can sleep comfortably. A child’s mattress can also work very well for large dogs.

Veterinary Care

Fido should see the vet at least once a year, for vaccinations, exams, and parasite control. We also recommend microchipping and spaying or neutering your dog. Ask your vet for more information.

Diet

Though proper nutrition is important to dogs of all ages, it will be particularly crucial when Fido is a puppy, as he will grow very, very quickly. Follow your vet’s recommendations, including serving sizes, supplements, and suitable treats.

Exercise

While Fido will need regular activity to stay healthy, not all exercises are suitable for big dogs. For instance, many larger dogs are at increased risk of specific conditions, such as hip dysplasia, and should not be encouraged to jump or stand on their back legs. Ask your vet for specific recommendations on your pup’s activity needs.

Training

Training is very important for larger breeds. You definitely don’t want Fido hauling you around on your daily walks! Make sure your pooch knows and obeys basic commands, such as Sit, Stay, and Come. If you’re having trouble training your pet, consult your vet or a professional dog behaviorist.

Aging

Did you know that large breeds age faster than small ones? Big dogs can become seniors in just six years. Keep an eye out for signs of aging, and adjust your pet’s diet and activity as he grows older.

Elevated Dishes

Eating from the floor can be hard on Fido’s back and neck. We recommend getting elevated doggy dishes.

Products

When shopping for Fido, make sure to only get products made for large breeds. Big dogs can choke on toys and treats made for little pooches! Even tennis balls can be a choking hazard for your furry pal.
